PUNTA LAGUNA TOUR

The tour in the Otoch Ma’ax Yetel Kooh Biosphere Reserve, popularly known as Punta Laguna, is one of the most authentic and respectful ecotourism and adventure experiences in the Yucatán Peninsula. Located on the border between Quintana Roo and Yucatán, near Cobá, this reserve encompasses more than 5,000 hectares and is sustainably managed by a cooperative of local families of Mayan origin.

Its Mayan name means “House of the Spider Monkey and the Puma,” an appropriate introduction to the deep connection with nature that this experience offers. The typical tour lasts approximately 2 to 3 hours and includes the following activities:

• Mayan Purification Ceremony

The experience begins with a Mayan Ceremony led by a community dignitary or shaman, who offers a prayer and performs a spiritual cleansing using the aromatic smoke of copal. Traditionally, this ceremony is performed to ask permission from the guardians of the jungle and Mother Earth to enter their natural environment safely and in harmony.

• Jungle Walk and Spider Monkey Observation

Accompanied by an experienced local community guide, you will venture along jungle trails surrounded by lush vegetation and native trees. The main purpose of the walk is to observe families of spider monkeys and, with a little luck, howler monkeys in their completely wild habitat. Local guides have extensive knowledge of the primates' habits and follow their calls and movements through the treetops.

• Archaeological Remains

Along the walking route, the tour includes a visit to small structures and pre-Hispanic archaeological remains, partially hidden by the jungle. These ruins are part of the extensive network of ancient settlements connected to the great Mayan city of Cobá.

• Rappelling and Swimming in the Sacred Cenote

Equipped with a harness, you will rappel down into an enclosed, cave-like cenote known as Cenote Las Calaveras. Once inside, you can cool off by swimming in its crystal-clear, sacred waters, surrounded by stalactite and stalagmite formations.

• Zip Line

The tour includes an exciting approximately 300-meter zip line that crosses high above a section of the lagoon and jungle, offering spectacular views from the treetops.

• Canoe Ride on the Lagoon

After the zip line, you will board a canoe. Paddling across this impressive and peaceful body of water offers a beautiful opportunity to admire the surrounding jungle landscape while enjoying the silence and tranquility of nature.

And finally, if you wish, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the lagoon.
