Therapeutic Uses

Some Therapeutic Uses of the Temazcal Bath

Effects on the Skin

The skin acts as a regulating mechanism for the body’s internal temperature. Although the temperature inside steam baths may sometimes exceed 50°C, the body has a natural self-regulation mechanism that usually prevents internal temperature from rising above 38°C. The skin functions like a third kidney, through which accumulated toxins can be eliminated. In many cases, especially among people living in polluted environments, the pores become blocked. The therapeutic mechanism of the steam bath activates these pores through the effects of high temperature. In addition, it stimulates skin renewal by promoting the exfoliation of the superficial layer while encouraging the formation of the acid mantle, which is essential for protecting the skin against infections.

Effects on the Respiratory System

Steam baths have been used throughout Mesoamerica in many rural communities to help treat conditions such as colds, bronchitis, asthma, sinusitis, and respiratory congestion, especially in children and the elderly. As body temperature rises and the steam combines with the aroma of medicinal plants, the respiratory pathways begin to open. Blood circulation in these areas increases significantly, from five to seven times more than under normal conditions. The lungs and bronchi expand, helping release accumulated toxins.

Effects on the Circulatory System

During the bath, blood circulation increases throughout the body, reaching even the most remote areas of the organism. Blood vessels dilate considerably, facilitating the elimination of toxins, uric acid, and cholesterol. Because of this, the Temazcal may help support conditions related to poor circulation.

Effects on the Nervous System

The bath produces a relaxing and stimulating effect on the body, helping to relieve stress, insomnia, nervous tension, and emotional fatigue. It also acts on a psychological level, allowing participants to release emotions and personal burdens.

Other Therapeutic Uses

For the digestive system, the Temazcal helps improve intestinal activity. For the muscular system, it may assist with sprains, bruises, inflammation, muscle tension, and physical fatigue. Through the elimination of liquids and toxins, it may also support weight loss and overall wellness.

Pregnancy and Postpartum

In different regions of Mexico and Central America, the Temazcal was traditionally used during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Traditional midwives used it as a preventive and healing practice for pregnant women and as support during labor. Medicinal plants were used inside the Temazcal to bathe and care for the mother. The heat helped relax and expand the body, making childbirth easier. After birth, women were bathed several times with medicinal herbs to support recovery and help the womb contract naturally.
